Parking in Rome is challenging, especially in the historic centre. The ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato) system strictly controls vehicle access.
Street Parking Colour System
- Blue lines (Strisce Blu): Paid parking — €1–1.20/hour, typically 8:00–20:00 Mon–Sat
- White lines (Strisce Bianche): Free parking — very rare near the centre, usually 3-hour max near hospitals
- Yellow lines (Strisce Gialle): Reserved for residents, disabled permit holders, and taxis
- Pink lines: Reserved for pregnant women and new mothers
ZTL (Limited Traffic Zones)
Several ZTL zones are enforced by cameras:
- Centro Storico: Mon–Sat 6:30–18:00
- Tridente: Mon–Fri 7:00–19:00, Sat 15:00–19:00
- Trastevere: Fri–Sat 21:00–3:00
- Testaccio: Fri–Sat 21:30–3:30
Entering a ZTL without authorisation results in fines of €100–400.
Garages
Near major attractions: €25–40/day (Colosseum), €20–35/day (Vatican). Park & Ride lots outside the centre connect via metro.
